Game For Windows Live Multiplayer Goes Free, DirextX 11 Unveiled. From the article:
The move to free means that achievements, enhanced "truskill" matchmaking, cross-platform play with the Xbox 360, voice and text chat, friends lists, are all now free to Windows gamers. This change to free is for all Games for Windows LIVE titles, past and future.
Microsoft also announced plans to introduce Games for Windows - Live marketplace this fall, which will include free and paid downloadable game content, demos, trailers and "more." Finally, the company said they are working to streamline the interface for the PC and reduce technical requirements for developers. Too little, too late? Too early to tell, I say.
In other news from GamesFest, DirectX 11 was unveiled.
The company calls DirectX 11 a "big step forward for gaming, adding features onto existing DirectX 10".
Key components of DirectX 11, will include:
o Full support (including all DX11 hardware features) on Windows Vista as well as future versions of Windows
o Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
o New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor
o Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
o Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close

If Nintendo is indeed seeking the possibility of creating a mind control headset, it is unlikely to see the light of day for at least another five or ten years. Still this is an interesting development. Thanks to aZm for the find.

RUMOR: PSP 3000 Features Built-In Mic, Already In Production

As can be seen in the picture above, the Home button on the original and current PSP models is now occupied by a PS button, similar to the one on the PlayStation 3 controller. One could assume that Sony would have made the Home to PS change in an attempt to prevent confusion with its Home service. The purported microphone is to the right of the volume buttons.

Nintendo "Thinking" About New Wii Remote With Wii MotionPlus Built-In
Posted by
Kevin

Nintendo "Thinking" About New Wii Remote With Wii MotionPlus Built-In. From the article:
Nintendo's corporate affairs VP Denise Kaigler confirmed to us earlier this week that the Wii Sports sequel is currently the only game that's confirmed to take advantage of the new sensor, but... what if? What if, say, Mario Teaches Sniping is coming down the line and requires the add-on? Will Nintendo release an updated Wii Remote, one integrated with the MotionPlus tech built-in?
Katsuya Eguchi, producer of Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus subject matter expert, says the company is currently thinking about integrating it into the current remote.
"We're always looking at how hardware will evolve," Eguchi noted, adding that it's too early to confirm anything about a new standard Wii Remote. There's a possibility that MotionPlus may simply remain an attachment only and that it may be used with limited software.
Talking to Nintendo employees after the Nintendo Developer Roundtable, we expressed our concerns that the MotionPlus would fragment the user base, that it may be leading to an overcomplication of the inherently easy Wii Remote. We were told that the MotionPlus accessory may be packed in with more than just Wii Sports Resort to prevent that sort of split between users.
Addressing other concerns that the Wii MotionPlus might lead to more difficult games, ones that require increased precision, Eguchi said that his teams "are very aware of this issue and we're keeping this in our thoughts during our development."
That said, Eguchi noted that "We want a gaming experience where [the player feels] 'the more you bite, the more flavor you get'."

Alan Wake To Appear At TGS For Sure (Maybe). From the article:
A Windows branded contest — one that actually dates back to March of last year(!) — tells us that we'll be seeing Alan Wake in Tokyo, at least in trailer form. It's entirely possible that we'll see the title as Games Convention, PAX or some other big gaming get together. But for now, pencil in a date with Mr. Wake for October. That's pencil, not pen.

The State Of Wii Casual And Wii Hardcore, Also Also My E3 Thoughts
Posted by
Kevin
, 17 July 2008 - 01:20 AM

Overall E3 2008 wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. There were only a handful of new game announcements but a lot of great games have been shown off and we learned a lot about some awesome stuff. Microsoft and Sony both had great conferences and of course we all know how we feel about Nintendo's press conference.
While Nintendo had an abysmal press conference, I believe this move was intentional and that it does not mean Nintendo doesn't have any hardcore games out there. I use the term hardcore since that is the term that is most used to describe the games that most big gamers use.
Nintendo intentionally concentrated on Animal Crossing, Wii Sports: Resort and Wii Music and Nintendo knew what the hardcore gamers were going to say and think. Nintendo isn't dumb, they've been around since the 1800's after all.
First and foremost, Nintendo is a business and they are in it to make money. Nintendo has raked in billions since the DS and Wii launched. Nintendo knows that Animal Crossing, Wii Sports: Resort and Wii Music will sell millions of copies. It will move systems. As far as Nintendo is concerned, these titles are what Zelda and Mario use to be in popularity in the 80's and 90's.
So yes, Nintendo has replaced us hardcore gamers with casual gaming first and foremost. This doesn't mean Nintendo isn't working on big name games. They are and a few were announced today. Nintendo has a ton of development labs and good close third party developers. New Mario and Zelda games have already been announced for both the Wii and DS (though early in development) and a new Pikmin for those interested. Retro Studios and many of Nintendo's own developers along with third party developers are all making games that we don't even know of. I read somewhere that all three games we saw at E3 were made by the same development team, EAD2.
Since the casual stuff is showing, Nintendo will likely continue to push these games as the main attraction for Wii. I work in a mall and I can see the excitement from nongamers, older and other forms of casual gamers. An old man sitting on a bench poking a DS, an elderly woman checking out the Wii Fit poster in a GameStop window, another actually playing Wii inside. Yes this is becoming a common thing. Nintendo achieved what was once thought impossible, they got nongamers gaming.
I obviously first and foremost like big games like Zelda but I do not dislike games like Wii Fit, Wii Sports and Wii Music. Actually, quite the opposite. Sadly I don't have many friends that play Wii. Most of them play Xbox 360, PC, don't game at all or only play Wii very little. Wii would be the killer party machine. These casual games would be a ton of fun at a party or just having a bunch of casual people over to play games. The unique motion controls deliver an experience that you can't get anywhere else.
My only gripe with these titles are that they are a little to simplistic in terms of both visuals and gameplay. Often these titles feel like simple tech demos meant only to demonstrate the capabilities of the motion control hardware. I would love to see a good, more realistic Wii Sports package with better graphics or Punch-Out that uses Wiimote + Nunchuck + Balance Board and this was actually rumored before E3 and Miyamoto mentioned this game as being a possible idea (could this game be in development? I am betting YES).
As it stands right now, I don't often play my Wii because most of the gamers are better suited with more then one player playing. So I usually stick with single player gamers since those are more enjoyable when playing alone. The Wii Balance board offers up a lot more possibilities when combined with the motion controller and this simple Wii Ski game actually looks like a ton of fun:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=n_7S5KlHuP8
I would love nothing more then to play this with another person. It just looks like a hell of a lot of fun. There are like 10 games at least in development that supports the Wii Balance Board (probably even more).
Again, my only gripe with the Wii is that everything is overly simplified. It's like a teaser to a real meal. I wish I could have the full experience of the Xbox 360 combined with the Wii's motion controllers. Microsoft does a lot of things better then Nintendo does (bigger games, better graphics, better online, etc) but Nintendo innovates a lot more then Microsoft does.
If Nintendo offered more meat with their games as well as with their hardware then that would be incredible. A real sword fighting game instead of with colorful Mii's, for example, would be ground breaking. Specially if you added online play to it.
Even Wii's limited hardware still has a ton of potential. Big games can be done on the Wii. Games that take full advantage of the Wii's motion controls, balance board, Wii Motion Plus and more. Nintendo is working on some of that stuff but it will be a long time before we see any of their bigger projects released. Maybe late 2009 at the earliest.
I still hold the belief that the Wii has a hell of a lot of potential to be an incredible system. Innovation is sparkling on the Wii with hardware, I just wish it would do the same with software more. Instead, nearly no third party developers will make anything worth the time.
So we are stuck with whatever Nintendo themselves makes. First priority for Nintendo is family, casual gaming with hardcore being the second priority. I may consider getting Wii Fit (when the price is down), Wii Sports: Resort if the game looks decent enough when it launches and Wii Music if it works out well when released. I just wish these titles were more feature complete.
Nintendo is working on bigger things but expect it to be a long wait. Usually third party developers would come to the rescue in the mean time but since they are not, it appears even more that the Wii just isn't delivering the games. This isn't really Nintendo's fault. Yes they could have thrown us a few more scraps but they didn't. At least they reminded us that big games are still coming. We just need to wait for them now.
Sometimes I have a difficult time deciding whether or not to pay full price for many of Nintendo's Wii games due to the over simplistic design of some of these games but then the gameplay is what really shines. Even titles like Wii Bowling and Wii Tennis are fun to play, admit it!
I really wish Nintendo would add online play to Wii Sports: Resort and Wii Music. Both are perfect titles. Wii Sports: Resort, sword fighting someone would be tons and tons of fun and Wii Music, you could create bans, make songs and share them with your friends... to be honest, I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't do this stuff. Is it because they are to cheap and lazy or do they believe casuals would get turned off by such functionality? I mean... with Wii, I see tons and tons of "Breakthrough" possibilities that are for some reason, skipped over. Many Wii titles would be worlds better with online play but it never happens and I never quite understand why.
Animal Crossing looks a little poor to me. Apparently one of the developers said there is a bug in the DS version that is in the new Wii version but they have no intention of fixing it. Yes they said this and I was shocked. Also nearly all of the graphics assets are the same from the GameCube version of the game. Some new features, some features removed (like NES game playing). 1up, IGN and others are saying it's nearly identical with the past two games in the series and does nothing new. I don't care for Animal Crossing but this does make me wonder why Nintendo wouldn't want to do more with the series? Better graphics, new features, etc.
Either way, Wii is a system that has a ton of potential that may never be tapped but isn't necessarily a horrible console that should be sold right away. I wish it offered the experiences that Microsoft and Sony offer in terms of software quality and even hardware quality but Nintendo does have some things going for it like ease of use, innovation and stuff along those lines.
In the end we just need to wait and see what Nintendo has in store for the Wii and whether or not third party developers will ever catch up and stop with the shovelware. I am disappointed that we still have to wait to see anything amazing announced for the Wii that directly appeals to hardcore gamers but mark my words, despite the simplicity of the titles that were announced, they will sell millions. At least we still have VC games to play while we wait for new stuff.
So I hope this clears up my views at least. I am not blown away by anything on the Wii but I do think many of these games would be helluva fun with a bunch of friends around to join in with. For single player expriences... not so much. If the games offered more meat then maybe it would be enough. I will continue to wait for the next Zelda or other big titles that appeal to me more while also considering trying my luck with some of these "Casual" games.

iD Software's John Carmack: Doom 4 Looks Much Better Then Rage

Doom 4 should look much better then Rage shown here.
According to iD Software, the near CG quality "Rage" title isn't the prettiest game iD Software is working on. No, apparently Doom 4 apparently looks so good that it looks an entire generation ahead of the graphics seen in Rage. From the article:
The jump in graphical fidelity comes about as Doom 4 is targeted to run at 30 frames per second, whereas Rage will run at 60 frames per second. Carmack claims this allows id to throw "three times as much horsepower" at Doom 4.

Nintendo E3 2008 Press Conference

Video: Nintendo E3 2008 Press Conference:
http://livewire.ign....8/e3/index.html
Highlights:
-Animal Crossing: City Folk
-Voice Chat Addon (works with Animal Crossing)
-WiiSports: Resort (demonstrated with 1:1 Wii Motion Plus)
-Wii Music (various instruments shown)
-Third party titles (Call of Duty 5: World At War, Rayman, Star Wars: Clone Wars, GTA DS).
Nintendo's press conference, like last year, was rather void of actual games with nothing that appeals to the more seasoned games. The highlight to me was Wii Music though I don't think it offers online play so that kind of blows. For those hoping for Punch-Out, Kid Icarus, a new Zelda or anything nice like that... well try again next year.

For those interested, I am going to try and get up at around 12:00 PM (hour and a half before Nintendo's conference) to join in for some E3 chatter for Nintendo's press conference and Sony's shortly after. I will stay in probably for hours. You can access the Flash Chat by clicking the Flash Chat button at the top right hand side of the screen as shown in the above picture. Join in for some healthy speculation about what Nintendo is going to show off. Will we be wowed or will we be put to sleep? We will find out soon enough!

RUMOR: Slim, Sub $100 Nintendo DS Coming With Motion Control
Posted by
Kevin
, 14 July 2008 - 09:40 PM
Insiders also assert that Nintendo itself may alternatively be planning to release new DS cartridges with built in accelerometers, a possibility that could eventually negate the importance of Activision's peripheral.
In semi-related news, IGN has separately heard from trusted insiders that Nintendo could be planning to debut a slimmed down version of its handheld complemented by a dramatically reduced (sub-$100) price tag. Whether or not this made-over DS will include built-in accelerometer functionality is not known. There is a chance that the Big N will show off the updated DS at E3 2008 this week.
A redesigned DS might ship sans a GBA slot, which could explain why Nintendo might be separately developing accelerometer-based cartridges despite Activision's own efforts.
As always, until IGN can validate the information through multiple sources, readers should consider the hearsay posted in this article as rumor. We will update with new details as they become available.
