So yeah, seeing how slow traffic has been lately on both The Revolution Lifestyle and ZogDog, I decided to close down the blog and instead refocus my news efforts in our forums. I do not intend on reopening this blog up but you never know, if I come up with an idea then maybe I will consider reopening the blog. The traffic just isn't there right now and aside from a few stragglers, the blog is pretty much dead. The handful of people who did read what was posted on the blog, the same content including rumors, gaming news, tech stuff, etc will instead be posted in the regular forums so I hope you will join us there, perhaps for some healthy discussion.
With competition in the blogosphere so high and everyone's dwindling interest in reading blogs, it's a big waste of time to keep this blog up to date. Lots of interesting news out there and I will again continue my efforts in the forums. So when I find or anyone else find interesting stuff to post, it will be in the forums instead of this blog. Thank you for your support. I'll see you all in our forums!
City Scape - A Nearly Photo Realistic City Simulation Utilizing Cloud Computing.

Utilizing cloud computing, a method in which several super computers are clustered together to work on one hive system, LivePlace intends to develop a virtual world much similar to Second Life but with near photo realistic visuals. According to the information available, City Scape will be an application that runs on practically any computer available today but will allow gamers to explore a nearly photo realistic city as if they were running a high tech game on a super computer. Instead the company itself will be doing the computer processing. You as a gamer will just be reaping the benefits. Check out these screenshots:

City Scape will allow consumers to explore a virtual world, buy properties such as an apartment, join public spaces like virtual restaurants and more. You will have the ability to choose an apartment or other building and configure it the way you want. Hang pictures, get furniture, share photos and videos from your computer on a TV screen and much more. It's like Sony's upcoming HOME but ten times better. Check out the lengthy in engine video demonstration here:
http://www.techcrunc...ing-technology/
The game will feature a dynamic day and night system as well as realtime weather changes. Remember the days of Second Life?

Well I am willing to bet that City Scape will eventually overshadow Second Life when it gets released and populated. City Scape, in theory can run on anything and everything and could potentially be released for the consoles and even mobile phones like the iPhone. I think the video in the above link should give you a good idea of what you can expect from not only the technology and graphics but also the game (or simulation!?) itself. It is definitely something I am interested in learning more about and I can't help but wonder if it will be free to play online or if consumers will need to pay a monthly fee to play.
I believe that simulations of this magnitude has the potential to be "World of Warcraft" big if the developers really push what can be done in the game. I think the developers will need to think outside the box and offer consumers things they can do in City Scape that cannot be done in real life. In one picture it shows that someone made a life like Transformer and walked around the city in it. Anyways, let me know your thoughts on this project in our forums.

AMD Claims Photo Realistic Graphics On The Horizon, Shows Off Pretty Tech Demos

The first screenshot is of a capture room in which a human, animal or object is placed into the room and gets captured in realtime to be added into the rendered environment. This is new technology that will theoretically allow game developers to create life like game assets and do so relatively easy. The other images are all said to be realtime graphics that apparently can be produced on two 4870X2 graphics cards in crossfired (from what I read a couple months back). There are also some videos available:
Ruby: http://www.amd.com/u...MD_Ruby_S04.swf
Scorpion: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=NuR1wBCw_FU
Faces: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=Bz7AukqqaDQ
The first two videos I have posted a couple months back but the faces one is new. That video shows off what the faces look like with animations added to them. These visuals represent a step pass the Uncanny Valley into a realm of near photo realism but considering nothing today can play Crysis on max settings and get stable framerates, one is left wondering just how far off is it before graphics cards can actually run games with graphics of this calibur. Gamers who want to play Crysis on max everything are stuck with only the option of expensive SLI setups which costs thousands of dollars.
AMD promises to revolutionize gaming graphics while at the same time both AMD and Intel are working on future configurations which fuse both graphics processors with regular computer processors. This may lead to giant leaps in graphics capabilities or it may not. The first versions of this "AMD Fussion" and "Intel's Larrabee" seems like it will offer a graphics solutions similar to what is already on the market but there is no saying what future iterations of the technology might be capable of.
None the less we are slowly entering the realm of life like visuals. I would say that the above screenshots will represent graphics capabilities of games 5-7 years from now.

Unreal Tournament 3 With Physx Upgrade

Kevin
, 13 August 2008 - 03:01 PM

Earlier this year Nvidia acquired Ageia Physx and has created a driver to allow Physx technology to work with all Geforce 8 and 9 series of cards and beyond. Nvidia has recently released their first driver with the software built in and they also released a few various goodies like some free games, tech demos, video editing tools, etc. In the mix they also rereleased the three Unreal Tournmanet 3 Physx enabled maps that now support the Geforce cards.

Also released was the new Unreal Tournament 3 patch v1.3. Anyways I decided to try out the three new maps. One was for deathmatch and the other two for capture the flag. While the maps do not offer full fledge physics found in stuff like Battlefield: Bad Company and Red Faction: Guerilla it does offer some neat new effects. One map had a tornado in it that swept up debrees and chunks of rock and such. Parts of the buildings could be destroyed in some maps but not every map and not everywhere. One map featured hail instead of rain in which the hail would stay on the ground for a portion of time. Other features included physics added to objects like dumpsters and rocks. You could also destroy some of those neon signs hung up.
As for CPU usage, without the new physics stuff the game usually gets at least a stable 60fps on the Geforce 8800gt but with physics enables, that framerate is cut down in half to about a stable 30fps. So is it worth it? Well it's certainly a nice feature to have and the physics stuff is only built into three maps designed for the physics and not your regular maps. If your computer can handle the physics processing then I would say it's worth it. I mean it's a simple free update. It's nothing incredible but it does add a little to the gameplay. I found myself shooting through a wall to get inside an enemies base quicker. I'm sure gamers can make use of the physics in terms of gameplay.
For those interested, you can check out the Nvidia power pack which includes the new display driver and a bunch of free content including the three Unreal Tournament 3 maps here:

You will find some interesting content in there including a free physics based game. Also, if you have Unreal Tournament 3, you can download the new patch here:

These are all in-game screenshots. Quantic Dreams has never used CG for a game. It is incredible to see this level of visuals from the PlayStation 3 (game is exclusive to the PS3). The animation video in the above link also show that these characters will have life like animations and movements which will no doubt help tell a believable emotional story.

Carmack: iPhone more powerful than Nintendo DS, PSP combined. From the article:
The gaming icon admitted that he's disappointed id has yet to ship a game for the iPhone, but said two tentative titles are now well in the works. One was described as a 'conventional mobile game,' while the second was said to be more ambitious in that it will test the limits of the iPhone's graphics capabilities.
While Carmack sees graphics memory as a potential limiting factor on the iPhone, he's stoked about the intuitiveness of the iPhone SDK. He also described the handset's hardware as equivalent to that of the Sega Dreamcast living room console, and almost on par with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's original Xbox.
When it comes to portable gaming systems, the iPhone is 'more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined,' he added. Apple's revenue sharing deal that offers developers 70 percent of the sale price was also cited as a plus.

Maximum PC also reports that the Xbox 360 version of Rage may wind up shipping on up to three DVDs — or suffer some serious compression compared to the Blu-ray version — a move that could cost millions in per-disc royalty fees. And think of the paper sleeve costs!

Doom 4 To Use 3X The Horsepower Of Rage, Run At 30 FPS. From the article:
"The next DOOM game will look like it's built on another engine, as it uses three times the horsepower," Carmack said, according to a 1UP report.
That visual fidelity will come at a price though, as Carmack says that Doom 4 will run at 30 frames per second, compared to Rage's 60 frames per second. The only other details provided by Carmack on Doom 4 was that the game would feature "guns, blood, demons, and gibs." Should've sent a poet...

People will complain about this announcement. It appears that Doom 4 is going to be the technology showcase game for iD Software much as Crysis is for Crytek. I still cannot play Crysis on max settings but I am excited for the day that I can (hopefully soon). I am even more excited to see that Doom 4 will represent another giant leap in terms of visuals for gaming considering that Rage on it's own looks rather impressive. I do hope that the gameplay is a little better this time around but if not then I will enjoy the game for what it ends up being. Doom 3 was not a bad game at all and it sold millions of copies and apparently is the best selling iD Software game according to John Carmack.

Intel Sees Raytraced Games In The Near Future

Dr. Michael Vollmer: We keep in touch with companies all over the world - I dare say that in two to three years time we will see something. There already are some individual approaches, especially in the science sector, which show that Raytracing algorithms are scaling very well with the numbers of cores. But the migration to a new programming technology takes years; Raytracing is still in an early stage.
You can read the full article here:

Here is a video of Quake 4 raytraced running on a super fast computer:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=DsCgJhoAm0c
On the side, you will noticed many more Raytracing videos you can check out as well. While raytracing in these videos doesn't really seem that impressive, if applied to a very pretty game like the upcoming Doom 4 then you would likely notice some incredible lighting, reflecting and shadow effects very easily.

RUMOR: Uncharted 2 to be unvieled at leipzig GS

Ever since it was first announced a couple of years ago, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has won the hearts of many Playstation gamers; it was the sole reason for me personally buying a Playstation 3. The game centers around Nathan Drake on his action-packed adventure, searching for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, and since its launch in November 2007, it’s been an instant hit with sales reaching nearly 2 million worldwide.
With Naughty Dog creating such a rich, vast world with interesting characters, it comes to no surprise that a sequel could well be in the works. Videogaming247 picked up on a French interview in which Christophe Balestra, Vice-President of Naughty Dog, “confirms” that Uncharted 2 is in fact in development. The interview originates from French website Gamekyo.com with a translation below:
“One expected it and Christophe Balestra, Vice-President of Naughty Dog, officially confirms it at the time of an interview with LCI: very good Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune will have right to its continuation, of course better according to statements’ of the creators. One awaits the first images and information.”
Now before you say, "Hey, TGR, this is old," we do know that the interview is from January, 2008. So why bring it up now?
Because of this: a certain David Reeves saying that there will be twelve announcements at Leizpig, and we will put money down that Uncharted 2 will make an appearance in trailer form during the Sony press conference. How do we know? Just trust us.
TGR Verdict: Very Likely
Source: http://www.thegamere...-29th-2008.html
Seeing how the first game was pretty impressive both visually and gameplay wise, I don't see why the company wouldn't consider making more of these games. Expect at least one or more Uncharted games. The first was well done.
RUMOR: Could Holography Cure Nintendo's Storage Space Blues?
Posted by
Kevin
, 30 July 2008 - 03:20 PM
Since the beginning of Wii, Nintendo's loyal followers have voiced their unanimous opinion; recently even Nintendo's top brass have admitted to it becoming an issue. The simple fact of the matter is the Wii just doesn't have enough storage space to encourage Nintendo's plans for WiiWare, Virtual Console and future expansions.
However, it seems that the problem, once notoriously labelled as solely for "nerds and otakus", could possibly draw upon a revolutionary approach if a patent that was issued earlier in the year is anything to go by.
"Miniature flexure based scanners for angle multiplexing" from inventor Bradley J Sissom, is the complicated sounding title for a solution to increasing the capacity of holographic data storage. Intriguingly Nintendo appear on the patent as joint applicants.
A brief education courtesy of Wikipedia reveals that holographic storage requires a laser to be split into two beams. Data to be stored is encoded onto the signal beam via the special light modulator, before converging with the reference beam and stored onto a photosensitive medium. Reading the data from the medium relies upon a beam being emitted onto the medium at precisely the same angle, wavelength, and position of the reference beam.
Unlocking the greater capacity offered by holographic storage relies upon adjusting the reference beam during the recording/writing phase. Altering the beam allows multiple holograms to be stored in the same volume on the holographic storage medium, which is where the patent comes into play.
You can read the full article here:
http://www.totalvide...3579_5386_0.htm
More details regarding Holographic storage can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia....ographic_memory
I don't personally see this having any baring on Wii. This might be a concept that Nintendo is researching for future console hardware but I am pretty confident that there won't be any holographic storage devices released for Wii. While Nintendo is indeed working on a solution to the Wii's limited memory, it will likely be something simple such as a small portable hard drive or something. Thanks to jaxjapan for the articles.

Gamesindustry: Red Steel 2 confirmed and it will use Wii Motionplus
Posted by
Kevin
, 27 July 2008 - 10:57 PM
Ubisoft is one of the first publishers to confirm the use of the Wii MotionPlus peripheral to improve the execution of its core Wii titles.
Adopting the tech for the sequel to Red Steel, Alain Corre, Ubisoft's executive director, has said the improvement of 3D motions will help the sequel achieve the ambitious gameplay attempted in the first game.
"Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product," said Corre, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.
The original Red Steel was released on the same day the Wii launched in Europe, and attempted to mimic the users' movements for gunplay and hand-to-hand combat, but was criticised for a lack of sensitivity.
Corre believes that the Wii technology wasn't finished at the time of launch, but the recent announcement by Nintendo that the MotionPlus add-on will track true 1:1 responsive movement will allow the development team to realise its ambitions.
"The Red Steel brand is strong - I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn't completely finished. And our game tried to grab the best out of it, and was a bit rushed to be sure to offer something in year one to Wii consumers," he added.
"So Red Steel is a brand, and as with every brand we have, we now have to reach the top quality possible. What was missing was the preciseness of the sabre - and with this new device I think it will change the experience."
Ubisoft is one of the few third-party publishers to see considerable sales success on the Wii, and Corre puts that success down to the amount of time spent on developing games for the unique home console, compared to competitors.
"When you make a great game, you need more than one year of development," offered Corre.
"A lot of games are made in less than a year, but they're not great products and they're not selling at all. So it takes some time to develop good games. This year we're coming with Shaun White, which we've developed over 18 months, and the same for Rayman 3.
"I think these two games can be in the top ten of the Wii charts at Christmas again, and there will also be new Wii games announced soon - more games dedicated to capturing this new audience," he concluded.
Source: http://www.gamesindu...ed-steel-sequel
This is definitely good news. It likely means 1:1 sword play finally. Hopefully Red Steel 2 won't be as bad as the original one.

A movie that will likely be buried under The Dark Knight, X-Files 2: I Want To Believe has been reviewed and while the reviews can't shake a stick at Batman, the reviews suggest that X-Files fans will love the new one, non X-Files fans will consider it to be alright but nothing incredible.

While it certainly isn't a revolutionary film, it looks to be enough to satisfy my X-Files craving. X-Files remains my number one favorite television show. I only wish the new movie answered more questions left from the tv series. Still, I am glad to see a new X-Files movie and there could actually be more of them made according to Chris Carter, depending on whether or not fans want more.

Epic Preps Unreal Engine 4 For "Next Console Generation". From the article:
Said Capps:
"We've got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now... it's going to be in the next console generation - our rough guess is 2012 [to] 2018."
Tim Sweeney also has a guess about what the platforms will be at that time, and in what order Epic will address them:
"Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3 - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that."

"Bonus Redeem Software" A New Wii Feature? From the article:
Will certain games have codes along with them for extra DLC? Or will they offer vouchers for, say, Virtual Console titles? That could be cool — for example, buy Mario Galaxy, get a freebie code for the original Super Mario Bros. on VC, something of the sort?
Puzzled Nintendo Everything:
I’m assuming that this could end up being free content for some games, but the specifics of this newest addition haven’t been exactly pinpointed. Still, I’m hoping that such a feature would eventually be considered for North America, but its anyone’s guess at the moment!
Who knows? We've contacted Nintendo of America to try and see if we can figure out what this is, and will update with any comment we receive.
